William Taylor completed Overnewton Castle in 1849. The Scotsman purchased 13,000 acres of outstanding grazing land west of Keilor village. Taylor used bluestone to construct a one-story colonial-style house. There were six rooms, each with massive shuttered windows and extensive verandahs. The homestead had expansive views of the surrounding countryside and was perched on a moderate hill overlooking Keilor. Keilor gained prominence in the 1850s as a well-liked rest point for travelers to the Victorian goldfields. The projects included building a bridge, a hotel, and two new schools. It wasn't until William Taylor's return from a trip to Scotland in 1859 that the magnitude of his dreams became apparent. He then started working on getting the machine to function. Designed in the Victorian Tudor style, Overnewton was influenced by Scottish and English structures from the 16th century.
The Scottish baronial style is characterized by rough-textured stones, steeply pitched roofs, and overhanging battlement corner turrets. The candle snuffer roofs exhibit French architectural influences. The bluestone walls of the estate were mined, then stuccoed and completed with golden gravel. The large windows in the main bedroom have the Taylor family crest, which is an armored arm and fist holding a dagger with the motto "Semper Fidelis" (always faithful). Numerous other windows have the initials HT, T 1859, and WT engraved above them. The house had around 35 rooms when this wing was constructed, including seven bedrooms (the main bedroom had a fireplace).
